why is gatwick airport reducing capacity?

Gatwick is asking some airlines to reduce the number of flights per day in order to be able to provide a service that passengers expect as they move through the airport either to or from an aircraft.

Approximately 4000 flights will be cancelled over the next two months to prevent last minute cancellations and avoid chaos seen during the half term break.

This is a temporary reduction in what is called 'declared capacity' (currently around 55 aircraft movements per hour) to improve the passenger experience and help ground handlers to better manage passenger processing and baggage handling.
